How to experience victory over temptation Principle #5 – Give your life to Christ
The single most important principle in breaking destructive habits and getting control of your life is to let God have control of it. Be born again. Get Him in your life so He can start changing your character. Being born again gives you a new capacity to resist temptation. You don’t have enough power in your own willpower. That’s why you keep falling. You need some supernatural power. You need Jesus Christ in your life. That’s what it means to be reborn.
Ephesians 3:20 (NCV) says, “With God’s power working in us, God can do much, much more than anything we can ask or imagine.” God’s power in your life shows up after you accept His son into your life. After you dedicate your life to Him. After you commit your future to Him. After you ask Him to forgive your sins. And with His power working in you, He can defeat the temptation that has been dogging you and defeating you.
When you accept Jesus Christ into your life you get a fresh start on life. You will not be able to say no to temptation until you first learn to say yes to God. You need His power in your life. You need to be reborn. That’s the starting point. Then you’ll have more than just your own power.
What’s the most vulnerable area of your life? What is your weak spot? Where do you have a lack of self- control? Is it my temper? Is it my appetite? Is it spending? What is it that you want in your life so badly that you’re willing to compromise in order to get it? A promotion? A thrill? Confess it to God.
I Corinthians 10:13 says, “God is faithful. He will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, He will also provide a way out so you can stand up under it.” What a great promise! God never puts more on you — He never allows more temptation to come your way — than He gives you power and strength to defeat it and bear up to it. You and God are a majority. God working in you and you cooperating with God. That is the key.
Resources you need in order to fight temptation:
1. Fellowship with other Christians. You will not make it if you do not have fellowship with other Christians. We were not meant to fight the battle’s of life by ourselves. Get involved with some Christian friends. Get involved in a Bible study, a life group. Find a place where you can share, meet some friends, then begin to share on a gut level.
2. Get into God’s word daily. The Bible is our secret weapon against temptation. It is the truth. Jesus said I John 8:31-32, “You will know the truth and the truth will set you free.” Do you want to be free from a destructive habit? Fill your mind with God’s word. Let it become the focus of your life. If you know the truth it will keep you from being deceived. If you want to know how Satan attacks, study the Bible, Meditate on the Bible. Memorize the Bible.
